On Stage Questions and Answers

The on stage questions at Miss Newark USA change each year. But one thing remains the same. YOU! The questions at Miss Newark USA are age appropriate for each age division. It is up to you, the contestant, to make sure you practice at home with your friends and family. Answering a question on stage can be nerve racking! However, once you hear the question, and know in your heart that you can answer it with ease and confidence. Nothing can stop you from reaching your goals.

Learn from your mistakes

Practicing at home or with a Miss Newark USA pageant coach are extremely important. To make sure you will be able to answer the question with complete sentences, and in a professional manner. Here are some tips to help you at home.

  1. Practice pageant questions by looking at yourself in the mirror as you answer the question

  2. Make sure you refrain from using these words and phrases “um”, “like” “you know”

  3. Making eye contact with the audience is super important try this with friends or family

  4. Smile through your answer and say thank you at the end of your answer

  5. There’s no such thing as a one word answer in pageantry

Let’s go through these helpful tips again. For tip number one, knowing your facial expressions is important. I’m sure most of us know of a famous resting face. You don’t want to have that expression when you’re receiving or delivering your answer. This is way looking in a mirror is helpful. Yes it may seem strange and uncomfortable at first. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll become a pro in no time.

Using these words and phrases comes naturally to all of us. However you have to remember that the Miss Newark USA pageant is a competition. The judges are looking for the best candidate for the job. And you want that person to be you. By putting yourself in the best light, will bring you closer to the crown. When you practice, remember you aren’t talking to your friends because that conversation would be to comfortable, imagine you’re speaking to someone you look up to, how would you compose yourself?

Eye contact is not only important but also respectful when talking to someone. At Miss Newark USA there are always three judges, when you practice eye contact at home, try placing three chairs or three objects on your couch. When you answer your question, look at each object or chair as you deliver. Yes staring at three pillows on a couch sounds funny, but this exercise will help you in the on stage question

portion of the Miss Newark USA pageant.

Smiling through your answer doesn’t mean speak through your teeth. Showing a smile, and pausing to breath is ok! You own the stage and your moment in the spot light. There is no need to rush your pageant moment.

Never answer a question with just one word. You have to explain your answer. Whenever a question has a “and why” that always means SAY MORE! This is usually for younger pageant contestants, older divisions the “and why” is implied for most questions.
