This is a skill that can be a gift or taught. Either way it’s something most people struggle with. Even the pros! Public speaking is one of the most important parts of competing at Miss Newark USA. Being able to project your voice, address an audience, with passion should be easy… Right?
Projecting your voice is your power, the audience is there to listen to you and your message. Here are some ways you can practice projecting your voice at home in preparation for the Miss Newark USA pageant.
Looking in the mirror recite morning mantras
Practice holding a tv remote or hair brush as a pretend microphone
Recite your essays for school in front of your family or friends
Practice smiling in front of the mirror, say your name and a topic you are going to discuss until you feel confident
These are only four of many ways to start preparing for any public speaking event. You can practice until your face is blue, however if your passion isn’t there… you’ll be missing something in the delivery of your speech.
Being passionate about what you’re speaking about is more than half the battle when it comes to public speaking. Being passionate keeps the audience attention. Being passionate changes your body language from nervous to outspoken and strong. Being passionate changes everything. If you believe in what you’re saying, then so will everyone around you. At Miss Newark USA, all contestants are required to compete in the Spokesmodel competition. This is where young girls and women deliver a speech on a specific topic. Their passion, and confidence, shows on the Miss Newark USA stage, with the help of pageant training through the pageant organization.
Yes public speaking is scary, but you have to OWN it. Remember no one knows your speech accept you, and your Mom. There are many ways to make a creative mistake. The cover up is how you make it better. Take your time when you speak, leave moments in your speech for a pause, and always make sure you tell yourself you are the director, creator, and writer of your own story!
